Common Questions Grade 9 Students Have About High School Math
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MATHEMATICS
Explained by our teacher and department head of Math, Marlene Svengaard!
Math 10C
(5 credits)
Mathematics 10 Common (Math 10C) is designed for students who have passed Grade 9 mathematics. Major topics include: measurement, trigonometry, polynomials, linear functions, function notation, and systems of equations. Each topic area requires the development of a conceptual knowledge base and skill set which will be necessary regardless of whether students choose to continue in Math 20-1 or Math 20-2.
Math 10C Transitions
(10 credits)
If you passed Math 9 within the 50%-60% range and need some extra support to be successful, Math 10C Transitions is the right choice. In the first part of the course, you will work on essential math skills needed to succeed in Math 10C. During the second part of the course, you will start to challenge Math 10C.
If you are planning on taking Math 20-1 or 20-2 and need a little extra time and support to get there, then this is the class for you!
Math 20-1, 30-1
(5 credits each)
These courses are for students who plan to enter post-secondary programs that require calculus, such as mathematics, engineering, and science. Students in this pathway will study quadratic functions and equations, trigonometry, radical and rational expressions, sequences, and series. Students in Math 30-1 will study trigonometry, relations and functions, permutations, combinations, and binomial theorem.
Math 20-2, 30-2
(5 credits each)
The 20-2 and 30-2 courses are for students who plan to enter post-secondary studies that will not require calculus, such as nursing, education, arts fine arts, music, and physical education programs. Students in this pathway will study deductive and inductive reasoning, statistics, trigonometry, and algebra. Students in Math 30-2 will study logical reasoning, probability, relations, and functions.
Math 10-3, 20-3, 30-3
(5 credits each)
This skill-building pathway is designed to prepare students for the everyday challenges they face in life. Learn how to get the best deals when you go shopping, redecorate a room in your house, budget for your dream vacation and so much more. This course is also ideal for students wishing to enter the trades. This pathway will help prepare students for apprenticeship exams. Math 10-3 and Math 20-3 meet the minimum math required for an Alberta High School Diploma.
Math 10-4, 20-4
(5 credits each)
This pathway is for students working below grade level towards a Certificate of High School Achievement. Students learn strategies for success to connect mathematical ideas to their everyday lives and integrate technology to perform the math needed in the workplace.
